Football is a funny thing
06.25.04 (12:52 pm) [edit]
Well, Euro 2004 just gets weirder and weirder. The Greeks have just managed to knock out the champions, France, and are through to the semi-finals. The thought that the French are out makes last night slightly easier to comprehend. I really must stop talking about football - i think i'm being brainwashed into liking it! From now on, if i mention football at all in my blog, feel free to shoot me - not literally though. I am,after all, only human!

06.25.04 (12:26 pm) [edit]
Black River Falls - Ed Gorman
I was strangely disappointed by this book - it's marketed as horror so i was really looking forward to it. Having read it, all i can say is it's a run-of-the-mill thriller involving two brothers, a girl and a river. Don't think i'll be trying anything else by Gorman in the near future.

How the heck can he miss a penalty like that? All through this tournament, he's been useless and tonight just proved it! Apologies to all Beckham fans, rant over!

Portugal have just scored in the second half of extra time and suddenly, my front room has gone deathly quiet. All you can hear is one of my cats singing to himself on top of one of the bookcases and the sound of my typing. This is not good - 10 minutes to go!

06.24.04 (12:59 pm) [edit]
Just finished Live Bait by P. J. Tracy, University by Bentley Little, Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich, Monday Mourning by Kathy Reichs and Pagan Moon by Freda Warrington. A. had his normal 2 days off work and has then been off for another 2 days sick so i've been doing a lot of reading and not much computering because he's always trying to see what i'm doing. He's that engrossed in shouting at the tv just now, it means i can get in some much needed blogging! Good to be back amongst you lovely folks!

Football woes
06.24.04 (12:53 pm) [edit]
|
Who in the heck thought it was a good idea to give the England v. Portygal match a Swiss referee? After we beat them? Somebody, somewhere is having a really good laugh, especially after that England goal was disallowed in the dying seconds of the game. Now we have to endure extra time and i have to put up with a drunken idiot shouting at the tv. Like that's going to make a difference. Let's just accept the fact that in a few minutes we might be out of Euro 2004 and life can get back to normal. Of course, we *might* not get kicked out, it could go to penalties, anything could happen but at the mo, it's not looking good!

Going through some weird times.............
06.21.04 (2:00 pm) [edit]
|
so please bear with me! This is my only outlet for a lot of stuff and i dread this being discovered too. I used to keep a journal but i found out the hard way that unless you keep it in a safe, it's not a good idea round some people. I'm in a situation i probably shouldn't be in but i don't know what to do. I'm so isolated up here, i have no friends, i don't work and i'm trying to cope with a chronic illness ( you'd think after 14 years, i'd have learnt to deal with that one but i haven't ) and to be quite honest, i think i'm slowly losing my marbles. I find myself crying for no reason - i've even woken up at night to find tears streaming down my face. Half the time i can't sleep anyway so i'm reading til 3 or 4 in the morning. If i can sleep, it makes no difference whether it's 5 hours or 10 hours - i'm so tired. So like i said, bear with me while i try to work through this. You never know, one day you might read my blog and i'll have discovered the secret of eternal happiness!

The stomper returns
06.21.04 (1:29 pm) [edit]
And where did he go? To the pub - what a surprise! He came in, asked me what was wrong with his grandad and why was he in a mood with him ( he wasn't ) , demanded some toast 'cause he was hungry, got in another strop because his grandad didn't hear him, then stomped off to bed. He's now sprawled across the bed and, i assume, going to sleep. Will he make a re-appearance in the front room tonight? Who knows? Actually, who cares? I certainly don't at the moment - and if he has decided to drink himself into an early grave, fine. Whatever. He won't listen to me, he won't talk to me - rationally anyway - so, fine, if that's what he wants, that's what he gets. His grandad is very close to losing his temper with him over the way he behaves and i don't blame him. I'll tell all you lovely tblog people the story of how we ended up living here with his grandad another time - don't want to heap all the crap on you at once! Have a good night folks!

Final score
06.21.04 (1:06 pm) [edit]
ENGLAND 4 - CROATIA 2
This means England are through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004 and get to play the host nation, Portugal, on Thursday. Hmmm, should be an interesting match!

Rooney is a wonder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
06.21.04 (12:12 pm) [edit]
ENGLAND 3 - CROATIA 1
Sadly, this means i may have to watch football for a bit longer as England appear to be on their way to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004. :( I don't know if i can cope with this for much longer and it means those stupid flags on the cars will be around for longer too.

A's drinking habits
06.21.04 (11:38 am) [edit]
Okay, i'm definitely worried now. I can type in peace without worrying that he's going to peer over my shoulder. Today he's had 4 pints of lager and a whole 70cl bottle of whisky. Is it just me being weird or does this seem like a lot? Bear in mind this probably how much he drinks every day - not just on days off. If anybody's got any ideas or just wants to tell me i'm being paranoid, feel free!

Stomped off
06.21.04 (11:30 am) [edit]
Well, the boy wonder has just stomped out of the house in a filthy mood all because England were losing. Ha ha, he went at the wrong time 'cause as the door shut, Scholes scored for England ( his first goal in 3 years for E.) And Rooney's just scored - England are winning and A. has gone out! He's missed 2 goals!

Mab's Book of the Week
06.21.04 (11:02 am) [edit]
Want to Play - P. J. Tracy
This was originally published under the title "Monkeewrench" in the States - which i think is a much more interesting title but the powers that be in England decided to go with "Want to Play" This book is an all-nighter - it's about a group of game designers who have created a computer game about solving murders carried out by a serial killer. Somebody has decided to carry out the murders for real though, and one by one, people are dying in the same gruesome way as in the game. Once you start reading this book, you won't be able to stop and if you're like me, you'll stay up til 5 in the morning to finish it! Just wish i'd remembered i had a doctor's appointment first thing this morning. I walked in and my doc was very concerned about how tired i looked - until i pointed out why!!!

but thank goodness England won - i was not looking forward to spending a weekend with 2 fanatical football fans if they'd lost. Unfortunately it also means that they're more likely to go through to the next round which extends the agony - unless they completely screw up on Monday

Okay, you might not have noticed i was gone but a freak power cut fried my computer on Wednesday and i've been cruelly separated from my internet for nearly 2 days. My kindly neighbour has lent me her spare computer until it can determined if mine can be brought back to life or not! I hope it can because this one i've borrowed behaves like it came from the Dark Ages!

32 matches left
06.15.04 (1:46 pm) [edit]
Just watched the joys of Germany v. Holland which means there are only another 32 matches to go until Euro 2004 is over! Am now enjoying ( not ) the delightful Mel Gibson in We Were Soldiers for the 15th time. I wanted to watch Lost Boys on MTV but i got outvoted again. Nearly got to watch Ring this afternoon but 5 minutes after i put the DVD in, someone else took it out to put the PS2 on to play Total sodding Club Management for 4 hours. Not impressed. Get paid tomorrow so will be off to Tesco to buy some decent food and to the pet shop to start stocking up on rat supplies for when i get Merlin next week!!! Yay!!!

Alcohol - problem or no problem
06.14.04 (12:24 pm) [edit]
Well, i got up. A. said he felt fine after drinking 9 cans of beer last night whilst watching the football but i don't believe him - he should feel like s**t. It's been a beautiful day here - nice and sunny and warm - still can't sit in the back garden though as it has grass about 5 feet high ( yes, that means i still haven't used the new strimmer) so just been hanging round the house. Nothing new there then! It's starting to get a little bit annoying though - at first it was a novelty not being at work and having a legitimate reason as well but the longer the good old docs at the hospital delay my operation, the longer it's going to be before i regain my rightful place in the bookshop and get back to my favourite thing in the world. Did go out for a bit - went to the library to pick up a couple of books i reserved and to the shop to get some cat food but apart from the the main entertainment of the day has been A. playing his PS2 from 10 this morning until about an hour ago when he fell asleep - sleep aided by the consumption of 2 litres of cider and 5 cans of beer. I'm sure he's drinking too much but of course i can't say anything 'cause he denies it. If someone can't manage one day without some form of alcohol and throws a tantrum if there isn't any in the house, does that sound like someone with a drink problem? Every time i mention it - which is not too often - he denies he's had that much, or he laughs or he gets angry ( that's the reaction that worries me most - i've already benn there, done that with my ex & i'm not doing it again) - he just doesn't seem to care. I read a really disturbing article in the Times mag yesterday about alcohol and quite frankly it scares me. Off to contemplate whilst avoiding Sweden v. Bulgaria! More later!

Saturday's book - a bit late!
06.13.04 (1:54 pm) [edit]
Trader - by my favourite author
What would you do if you woke up one morning in someone else's body but with all your memories? That's exactly what happened to Max Trader - he's goes to sleep himself, a luthier with his own appartment, his own business and an alright life, and wakes up in the body of a man who ranks lower than pond scum and is about to be evicted. I love this book, i really do - fantasy with an urban twist, a bit of Native American mythology added into the mix, kooky characters who you can't help but love - and you're hooked! In fact, i loved this book so much, i stayed up til 3.30am to finish it. No wonder i have bags under my eyes!

Dylan the assassin
06.13.04 (4:16 am) [edit]
Well, it had to happen sooner or later. The half siamese assassin has struck and brought me home my first dead present - he dropped a dead thrush at the back door - it was only a little one as well  I've been lucky in the fact that Dylan has been an outdoors cat for 4 years and the most he's ever brought home was a frog which promptly hopped away as soon as he let go. This time though, he's killed - i'm hoping this doesn't become a regular habit. It was really weird 'cause he let out what can only be described as a war cry before dropping it and running away - i think he could tell that i wasn't very happy.

Sundays are nice
06.13.04 (3:00 am) [edit]
Feeling better today - still a bit :( but better. Had a lovely lie-in until nearly 10am. Had toast for breakfast and now i'm doing washing. I'm sure dirty washing breeds because i swear the laundry bin was half empty yesterday and today it's full to overflowing! Oh well, it'll kill a couple of hours and it also means i miss out on the disection of yesterday's first 2 Euro 2004 matches which is currently going on in the front room. Bod, my little girl cat made me smile as well - she's currently fast asleep on the little ledge at the top of the window where it's open. She's a big ball of fluff and i think she's too warm - i just hope she doesn't fall through the gap! I've heard a rumour that there's a match on today that might have something to do with all these flags i see everywhere! Is it true?

Football
06.12.04 (2:42 pm) [edit]
Well, Euro 2004 has arrived - there is no longer any chance to avoid the sport known as the "beautiful game" Today, i have sat through 2 matches and am reliably informed that there are approximately another 41 games to go. I can understand watching England but why, oh WHY is there any need to watch every single game? And fixing your work rota round the different start times? I kid you not - five guys i know are doing this. They all work in the same place and they have bribed others to swap shifts. All i can say is roll on July 4th!

Life sucks
06.11.04 (12:44 pm) [edit]
Is it just me or are men selfish everywhere? I'm sat here feeling like i don't exist and i don't count. One male is asleep - granted he is 78 so that's allowed - and the other one is playing cricket on thePS2 - i'm fed up of PS2's, i want to smash it into bits. Grrrrrrr. I'm stuck at home all day 'cause no-one will give me a job because i have a chronic illness and i'm bored rigid. He gets home and instead of enjoying a nice evening, i'm even more bored. :x To top it all, my mum just phoned to inform me my great aunt Jess died on Monday and my nan - recently dianosed with Alzheimers - is failing fast and unlikely to see her next birthday which is in August. Do i get any sympathy? Do i heck! I get an "oh well, never mind" for my nan and a " you're not going to the funeral are you?" for my great aunt - like it's a crime to contemplate leaving the house and going to Scotland without him. He's a control freak - why am i here? Off back to Invisibility Corner - mustn't make a sound.

Friday's book
06.11.04 (6:02 am) [edit]
The Fetch - Robert Holdstock
Fantasy - of a sort. Holdstock is one of those writer's that just keeps you hooked. His writing is beautiful and i love the way he uses mythology - especially English & Celtic - and weaves it into his story as though it was part of everyday life. The Fetch is about a little boy who is adopted but his new parents discover he possesses strange powers. They find earth in his bedroom which contains ancient wood, tools and bits of bone. Very good! Mr Holdstock is in my top ten of authors and if you should ever get the chance, read Mythago Wood - exquisite!

I must find out how to put her blog thingy in my list of things that you have on the side because then more people can check out her really cute cats and her adorable rat! Anyway, back to the tbucks, i'm going to go and spend some so my blog can look a bit more snazzy than it does now. New and improved blog coming soon ( when i've figured out how to spend them! )

Very sore
06.11.04 (1:54 am) [edit]
My mood thingy says it all!! Yesterday i decided to to spring clean my bedroom - it's needed doing for a while but i just haven't been able to face it. The thing that spurred me on was when i fell over a pile of clothes for what felt like the thousandth time! Because i have rheumatoid arthritis i have to do things a bit at a time and pace myself. Did i do this yesterday? No, i didn't! Result - i spent yesterday afternoon and evening unable to move because i was too stiff and too sore. I didn't even manage my book of the day! I was too achy to hold a book - that's how i know i did too much. You'd have thought that after 14 years of living with RA, i would know how to pace myself but i haven't. I still find it difficult to accept that what i want to do is limited by what state my joints are in. By the time this finally sinks in, i'll probably be 90!

06.10.04 (3:36 am) [edit]
|
Isn't it funny how hearing one bit of music can completely change your mood? I've been down for longer than i care to remember but there's this one tune that just makes me smile and lifts my mood. What is this miraculous tune? Well, don't laugh but its called " Chasing sheep is best left for shepherds " by Michael Nyman. It was used on the soundtrack for the film " The Draughtsman's Contract " if you want to know where it's from.

Thought i better tell you all about my moggies - they are an example of what keeps me going. I have 5 beautiful cats ( yes, 5, you read right ) who you probably won't get to see unless i can get the software loaded for my camera. One day maybe!! Anyway, i have 4 boy cats - Spud ( black &white) & Jack ( tabby with white socks ) brothers who are 8yo, Dylan (black with white socks ) half siamese aka Puma who is 6yo, CC ( big fat tabby adopted from the Animal Rescue ) who is 4yo and then there's my little girl cat Bod, a big ball of black and white fluff who is 3yo aka Kitten or Titch 'cause she's tiny. My little moggie family who help keep me sane - they might not be thanking me in a couple of weeks. I'm getting a rat!!! His name is Merlin and i can't wait! It'll be interesting to see what the moggies reaction is - will keep you posted!

These are some of my favourite films, they're in no particular order but i wanted to share my eclectic likes with all you lovely people!!!
The Dark Crystal Labyrinth Legend Willow Beetlejuice Star Wars - the original trilogy LOTR - all 3 (really sad i know but i have a thing about elves) Hellraiser - all of them except that awful no.4 Halloween Donnie Darko Sleepy Hollow Ring The Usual Suspects The Ninth Gate Excalibur The Wizard of Oz Edward Scissorhands
Hmmm, starting to notice a theme here, a bit of a Johnny Depp thing going on.

Mowing and pondering
06.09.04 (4:12 am) [edit]
Can my day get any worse? Here i am, bored out of my brain and all set to mow the lawn and christen the snazzy new strimmer that was purchased yesterday, and have i done it? The answer is no - because Grandad is tired and doesn't want me to do the gardening without him. :x What does he think i'm going to do? The back garden couldn't look any worse than it already does!
Moral of the day - don't live with grandparents unless you're still a kid.

06.09.04 (1:13 am) [edit]
Ever woken up feeling that you just don't know anything! I'm sat here with all sorts of things running through my head and i just can't make sense of any of it. What is going on with my life! i rather suspect i'm bored but there's not much i can do about it. Well actually there is. One option is rather drastic and the other option involves cooperation from persons unknown to you lot that i know i'm not going to get. I'm going to go and cut the grass in the back garden and ponder. I'm also waiting for the postman - spent rather a lot of money on some books and they still haven't turned up.

Reading journal
06.08.04 (2:01 pm) [edit]
Just in case anyone's interested, i'm going to use this space as my online reading journal. It'll just be the title, author, genre (fantasy, thriller, horror etc. ) and whether it was good or bad, no major criticism - unless it's a truly awful book! Be warned though, there could be a lot of books listed as i'm currently averaging a book a day. You never know though, you might see something you want to read!

06.08.04 (1:55 pm) [edit]
Seeing as this is my space for me to talk about what i want without anybody moaning, i figure posting a snippet or two about my likes and dislikes and other stuff is cool. I have two passions in life that i'm fanatical about - actually make that three! The rest of my life is me trying to get by the best way i can and therefore not really interesting. If i need somewhere to vent though, things could get interesting! More about my passions later - don't want to give it all away in the first day!
