Never trust a doctor with...............
07.29.04 (2:59 am)   [edit]
a needle in his hand!!!! I got the lecture about missing blood tests and how important they were so i said fine and i'll make an appointment, only to turn round to see him stood there with a needle and blood tubes in his hand. Aaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhh hhh!!! I hate blood testd, i hate needles!!! There was no escaping though and he jabbed me in my right arm and got a few drops before my vein decided to move!! Of course, being right-handed, i spent yesterday not being able to move my arm because it seized up - this happens every time and i have a lovely big bruise too!

Nice morning, manky afternoon
07.27.04 (4:01 am)   [edit]
Got lots of goodies in the post this morning and a nice big box full of books from Amazon arrived too!! Have spent all morning disposing of the evidence - the cardboard with Amazon stamped all over it! - and re-arranging various piles of books so that you'd never notice another 13 books had been added since yesterday. Got a proof copy of Volume 1 of the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant too - not out till October, it's called The Runes of the Earth and it's huge. Must be quite popular as i noticed on eBay that the same proof copy that i have has been selling for up to £95 -amazing! Think i'll hang on to mine though!
Manky afternoon, got a doctor's appointment at 2pm to check if i'm still lurgified, to discuss the strange lumps that are appearing on my hands and wrists that don't appear to be caused by my RA and to get shouted at for not having a blood test for 3 months. Oh joy! What a great afternoon! And to top it all, it looks like it's going to rain :(

Kitty cat update
07.25.04 (9:49 am)   [edit]
Just thought i'd let you all know how Bod was doing!! She's come out of her shell completely - again!! But only since Thursday! She now sits in the kitchen all day and sleeps in the hallway between the kitchen and the front room. She hasn't been on the windowsill at all, she's not pulling at her fur and - and this is a big AND - she's using the litter tray again!!!! She is absolutely scoffing her food and trying to nick more from the big boys!
A big thank you to everyone who gave possible causes, advice etc. - it was all muchly appreciated!!! Will update about the ongoing saga that is Bod again! :D

Console obsession
07.25.04 (5:30 am)   [edit]
Okay, i got the amount wrong and have been severely reprimanded! There are actually only 14 and these are what he has -

Sega Saturn
Sega Mega Drive
Sega Master System
SNES
Atari Lynx
Sega Game Gear
Atari 680
Atari Jaguar
Atari ST
Amiga 500
NES
X-BOX
Dreamcast
PS2

He did have a Gamecube but after CC chewed through the wires, it doesn't work anymore! Yipeee! Have tried to get CC or any of the mogs to chew the wires on the PS2 but they won't go near it!

Huddersfield
07.25.04 (4:56 am)   [edit]
Anyone from Huddersfield? Or know what it's like? A. has an informal interview there on Wednesday to be transferred as assistant manager for 6 months but it could turn out to be permanent. On the plus side, it's commutable - only 50 minutes on the train, it's more money and he'll stay at the same level at the end of the 6 months if it doesn't end up being a permanent move. On the negative side, if it ends up being permanent, i can't see him doing the commute for ever which means at some point he's going to want to move, to Huddersfield. Hmmm, not sure about that one. Anyway, tbloggers, i'll let you know how he gets on!

Just when i thought it was safe......................
07.25.04 (4:38 am)   [edit]
i now have another bloody console to contend with. A. took advantage of my being ill on payday and pulled a sneaky - he bought an X-BOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!! What on earth have i done to deserve this torture? We now have a total of 15 new and old consoles in this house - in the back hallway, there is what's known as Console Mountain! Couldn't he be into something marginally more interesting than "retro gaming" ? I almost wish i wasn't feeling better and that i could still hide in bed away from it all! Off to cough and splutter in a corner and think of evil ways of killing consoles!

I hate being ill!
07.23.04 (1:33 am)   [edit]
Well, a long absence for me! Having got over the cold i had a couple of weeks ago and then a migraine last wek, i now have flu and a chest infection. My immune system is shot to pieces thanks to my rheumatoid arthritis - if someone gets a cold, you can pretty much guarantee i'll end up with flu! I'm on antibotics and other yucky stuff - i hate taking pills but this is about the 10th time i've been ill this year so this is a valiant attempt to shift it once and for all! Anyway, it's good to be back and if i manage to stay awake for more than an hour or two at a time, i'll post more later!

Bad migraine
07.16.04 (2:13 am)   [edit]
so no blogging for me for a couple of days! Am much better now so normal service is resumed!! Am going to add a link to my page to join a fantastic reading group run by me and Ratty so if you like reading fantasy and horror novels, come and join! We'd love to see you - and it's been a bit quiet. It's a small but selective group and we chat about books a lot and about films a bit too!
Link will be up when i figure out how to do it!

Stupid arguments
07.13.04 (3:57 am)   [edit]
The novelty of A. being on holiday is definitely wearing off. After listening to more stupid PS2 music on a stupid football game than any sane person should have to tolerate, i snapped. I told him i'd had enough of the machine and that he should try to remember it's not just him that lives here. His grandad and i sit here twiddling our thumbs while he "manages" a football team for anything between 3 hours (if he's been at work ) to 11 hours ( if he's on holiday ). Anyway, various childish insults were traded and then he said what he always says - " Right, i'll pack your suitcase then and you can pee off" followed by stomping into the bedroom and throwing my clothes round for half an hour, followed by "i'm sorry, i didn't mean it, peace? " I dumbly just nod my head but today it's the same old. The PS2 went on at 11am - "just for 30 minutes" and at 1pm, it's still on!
Oh, and the book sorting/cataloguing still hasn't got any further than the 167 i did the other day. Any suggestions on how to creatively destroy a playstation would be gratefully received!

Cool quote
07.11.04 (4:33 am)   [edit]
This is the way i feel when someone agrees with me - i always think they're humoring me! Anyway, here's the quote.

"Whenever people agree with me I always feel I must be wrong."

Oscar Wilde

Sunday Sunday
07.11.04 (4:04 am)   [edit]
Why is it that Sunday's always drag? When i was little, i actually used to look forward to Monday because it meant i'd got through another boring Sunday. If i wasn't a reader, i don't know how i'd have done it. Anyway, i digress - back to the here and now. Been up since 10am and am highly bored. Spent half an hour counting all my 1p's and 2p's so i could cash them in - turns out i had £5 worth of copper. Woo hoo!! A minor miracle has occurred though - it's 1pm and somebody still hasn't turned on the PS2  But that could be because i'm being subjected to the British Grand Prix instead - which is another sporting event that probably won't be won by an Englishman!
Oh well, off to my usual Sunday habit - reading a good book. See you later, tbloggers!

Excuses, excuses
07.10.04 (10:41 am)   [edit]
Apparently, i'm meant to grateful to A. for him not wanting to do it. Today is his birthday - so far he's

-drank ( a lot but nothing new there )
-slept ( to get away from me )
- played his PS2 ( to annoy me mainly, i think. The machine has been on since 10am and includes the 4 hours he spent sleeping)

I give up - i don't know what to do anymore. Like my esteemed buddy, i'm tired of feeling like i can't do a thing right - and that apparently includes my moods. Go figure! He was good enough to be happy until after i gave him his presents - MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

The book saga continues
07.10.04 (10:29 am)   [edit]
Well, i decided to go ahead and make a start on the sorting out. Before physically moving the books, i want a complete record on the puter so i can keep track of new arrivals and check what i've got by authors, see what i need to complete series and other stuff like that. First step is to write it all down and then transfer it - i grabbed my extremely large pad and made a start. I though to myself - stupidly! - that if A. saw me doing it, it would make him feel guilty, seeing as he's been promising for a long time that we're going to do this. Did it work? No - in a nutshell, i got told to move out of the way of the tv because he was trying to play cricket. So it looks like it's going to be and my notebook on our own for quite some time. I don't mind that too much - it's the actual moving of the books that i'm not up to at the moment so i need help. Is it going to be forthcoming? Not any time soon! On the bright side, my copy of White As Snow by Tanith Lee arrived this morning - 2 weeks after i bought it!! Never mind, one more Lee to be crossed off the list.
On the book sorting note, i've done one bookcase in the front room so far and a random shelf placed behind the tv. 167 books and it only took me 45 minutes to write them down. If i can do the rest that quickly, i reckon it'll take me about 27 hours to get them all written down. How long is it going to take to get them on the computer after that?!

Cold Mountain
07.09.04 (8:53 am)   [edit]
Just when i thought my day couldn't get any worse, i've just had to sit through nearly 2 and a half hours of one of the worst films ever. The book of Cold Mountain was okay - i wouldn't say it made my top 100 of books - but it was better than Captain Correlli's Mandolin, which made my top 5 of worst books ever read. The reason for watching this dire film - A. thought i was peed off with him about the PS2 playing so he thought i would like to watch it. This is the DVD that i told him not to buy because it looked bad but he wanted to see it - so i got to suffer. My request to watch Freddy v. Jason was met by a blank stare and " you are joking, aren't you? " Well, no, i wasn't actually!
Do you know, in this house there are about 500 DVD's, of which probably 100 are mine. How many of my films have i seen? Last count showed it to be approximately 15 - out of 100. Grrrrrrrr :x

Destined never to get these books sorted out
07.09.04 (2:59 am)   [edit]
Well, today is day 2 of A.'s holiday and supposed to be day 1 of sorting and cataloguing our books - sad i know, but as we now have over 6000 books in our house, it has become necessary as i am having trouble remembering what i've got and they're starting to take over the living space. They badly need tidying up and it's driving me crazy!
What's happened so far instead is - he didn't get up til 10.30, he then got washed and dressed and went to the local shop to stock up on supplies ( he did buy me a bag of M&M's so a bit of leeway there! ), he came home, opened a bottle of cider and has now plonked himself in front of the tv and is playing Total Club Manager on the PS2. Aaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhh hhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has been promising for nearly 2 months that we would sort the books out this week and for some reason i believed him. I should have known better :x Off to sulk quietly in a corner and eat chocolate!

Special occasion!
07.08.04 (5:38 am)   [edit]
Today is cat no. 4's birthday!! Yes, CC was born on this day 5 years ago so everybody say
"Happy Birthday CC! "
He's been spoilt rotten so far and has got lots of new toys and a brand new collar - he looks very smart! In honour of his birthday, all the mogs are having fresh chicken for their tea which is cooking as we speak. Even Bod has deigned to spend the day with her big brother, instead of hiding away on the windowsill!!

Digital cameras
07.08.04 (4:20 am)   [edit]
Anybody know how these things work? Have had one for a while that's not really been used. Anyway, 3 of our moggies were in perfect picture moment so A. decided to dig out the camera - and it won't work
The power light flashes on and that's all it does - nothing else. The batteries are fine, we've checked them so i'm at a loss as to why it doesn't work ( not being in the slightest bit technical minded ) Any help would be appreciated because A. is getting into a right old strop about it and at the rate he's going, he's going to end up lobbing it at someone.

Feeling better!
07.08.04 (3:00 am)   [edit]
Well, i never did get any sleep yesterday afternoon :( I went for a walk to the library to see if i could clear my head - and get some books of course! Drank plenty of tea & honey and gargled with some aniseed to ease my throat. Stayed up til midnight while A. played football on his PS2, went to bed, picked up my book and woke up at 3am with my glasses hanging off and the book mashed against my face! Had a nice lie-in until 10 this morning and feel tons better. Still got a sore throat and earache but at least i can speak properly now!!
A. now has a week off so i expect i'll be blogging a lot to avoid constant PS2 playing.
Later!!

Morning tbloggers
07.07.04 (2:17 am)   [edit]
Well, i have got up this morning with a stinking cold and a sore throat so i'm not in a good mood. Add in no sleep and i'm sure you can guess how bad i feel :( I'm off back to bed to see if i can sleep now - will probably be better without A. snoring his head off all night!
Will be back later, fellow tbloggers!

Cat psychology
07.06.04 (12:43 pm)   [edit]
Talk about synchronicity! A. came home from work with an excellent book. It's called Think Cat - An owner's guide to feline psychology by David Taylor. Off to peruse it and see if there's anything that can make sense of my baby girl's behaviour. Will keep you posted, tbloggers!

Books can kill!!!
07.06.04 (10:30 am)   [edit]
Just received this article and i thought i'd share with you. Humble apologies if you've seen it all before.

St. Petersburg Times
If books could kill . . .
MARGO HAMOND
Published July 5, 2004

We are worrying about the wrong things, says Laura Lee in
100 Most Dangerous Things in Everyday Life and What You Can
Do About Them. The most dangerous threats are right under
our noses.

Candles. Screwdrivers. Teddy bears. Books.

Books?

Here's Lee's warning.

-- MARGO HAMMOND, Times Book Editor

Books are an often overlooked hazard, sending more people to
the emergency rooms than many common sports. In case you
were looking for an excuse to put down that copy of
Tolstoy's War and Peace, here it is: in the United Kingdom
more people are hurt by books (2,707 a year) than by
training weights (1,884), trampolines (1,902) or cricket
balls and bats (1,174). Lest you think only British books
are hazardous, you should know that 10,683 U.S. citizens
lose their battles with what the National Electronic Injury
Surveillance System categorizes as "books, magazines, albums
or scrapbooks" in an average year, and another 1,490 are
clobbered by magazine racks or bookends. What are so many
people doing wrong?

"From working with books for many years," said Karen Miller
of the American Library Association, "I could offer up
things like broken toes when books fall, losing one's
balance when reaching for books and repetitive stress from
shelving them. Magazines could also be dangerous if the
staples are loose and scrape the skin."

The heft of books is a special problem. Back injuries from
moving overloaded boxes of books are common. Heavy
schoolbags also are a concern.

In 2003, a Hong Kong schoolboy was killed when his heavy
book bag pulled him over the railing of his high-rise
apartment. . . .

Second-hand book use can also be hazardous to your health.
Researchers in Bogota, Colombia, tested the book dust in
twelve libraries and ran skin tests on fifty-seven
librarians. About 12 percent of the librarians had allergic
reactions to the book dust, but the doctors found no
evidence of common allergens. This led researchers to
conclude that new respiratory allergens may be lurking and
evolving in the stacks.

Book exposure may even get you high. Mycologist (fungus
doctor) Dr. R.J. Hay, of Guy's Hospital in London, reported
to a British medical journal, the Lancet, that various fungi
that feed on the pages of old books could be a source of
hallucinogenic spores.
"The source of inspiration for many great literary figures
may have been nothing more than a quick sniff of the bouquet
of moldy books," wrote Hay.

Raining again!
07.06.04 (9:55 am)   [edit]
What is going on with the weather? It's absolutely chucking it down again and i'm having a hard time believing it really is July. In the last week, we've had one day without rain and i've just seen the weather forecast for the next couple of days warning of gale force winds, torrential rain and localised flood warnings. This is not right - where's our summer?

Kitty cat problems part 2
07.06.04 (7:49 am)   [edit]
Thanks to everyone who responded about Bod. I am very worried about her. I was wondering whether it could be psychological - do cats have psychological problems? She's become very solitary, ignoring her brother and only coming out of her new hiding place when it's grub time. She still sings her head off to me though and loves her cuddles & treats, she seems happy enough in herself so i am puzzled. The only other thing she's started doing is not using her litter tray to wee - she keeps going by the back door. I'm at a loss and all the vet said when i asked about this was don't worry.

Kitty cat problems
07.06.04 (5:58 am)   [edit]
Anyone know what could be causing my litlle girlcat Bod to pull her fur out? She keeps grabbing big mouthfuls of fur in her mouth and just yanking. She's flea free and doesn't have any obvious skin problems - at least that's what the vet said - but it's really upsetting me to see her pulling her fur out. Any ideas?
